Formal Pledging

There has not been much to report on during the last few weeks. Members have slowly begun to settle into their semester routine and life is returning back to normal. Although things have been slow lately, that is about to change with Homecoming Week approaching on Sept 19th. Sign-up sheets are on the walls and preparation is underway. We are dedicated to winning Homecoming this year! I will keep you all posted throughout the week with the results of the competitions through our Newsfeed, as well as pictures and videos in our Gallery.

Last night was a very important night for this chapter. After a successful summer of recruiting, thanks to Recruitment Chair Reggie Ruhl and the many members of his recruiting team, I am proud to announce that Iota Gamma formally pledged 26 excellent gentlemen! I have had the chance to get to know most of these men and I am truly excited for them to be going through our pledge semester on their way to becoming members of this great chapter. Through the next eight weeks, New Member Educator Ryan Figgins will guide these men on their journey and they will become bonded together as the 2011 Fall Pledge Class!

Summer Update

Summer is quickly coming to a close and the school year is fast approaching. A lot has happened since the last summer update, so I will dive right into it.

We currently have 25 people signed to our 2011 Fall Recruitment class. Since the last update we have added the following gentlemen to our pledge class: Zach Justus (Lincoln), Tony Munch (Kearney), Connor Schultz (Pierce), Scott Jasnoch (Kearney), Seth Onderstal (Wayne), Bryan Lienemann (Doniphan), Brock Shuler (Plattsmouth), Taylor McPeak (Valentine), Jake Irwin (Kearney), Zach Hiebrier (Gothenburg), Nick Lee (Doniphan), Taylor Jurgens (Beatrice), and Blake Weeder (Alma). We are excited to welcome these men to our pledge class and have high hopes that they will be great additions to our chapter.

Next, Andi Diediker, Cory Foote, Reggie Ruhl, and myself went to Memphis to the 2011 Academy a few weeks ago and our chapter brought back a handful of awards. We received awards for: 100% Phi Phi Kappa Alpha Commintment, International Workday Participation, and 25 Men Pike University Attendance. We also received our chapters 24th consecutive Raymond Orian's Chapter Excellence Award, which is a great honor!

The last big news from the 2011 Academy involves Alumnus member Nate Summerfield. Nate was the recipient of the Robertson Most Outstanding Undergraduate Award, given to the top undergraduate member of the Fraternity. This is a great honor for our chapter and Nate.

One other piece of information that we learned at the Academy is the future of our website. Our Internationals will be offering each chapter a free website through OmegaFi. This is exciting news for our chapter as OmegaFi will be providing us with our website, database, and financial services. The switch over will be occuring later this year, so be on the lookout!

This will be the last update of the summer. The school year will begin on Monday, August 22nd and move-in day is on Friday, August 19th. Summer Recruitment Update

Just a quick update on summer recruitment. We currently have 12 guys signed to the 2011 Fall Recruitment Class. There was a mistake on my part in the last posting, so I will re-list the guys that have signed so far.

Week 1 Summer Recruitment

It has been an excellent week of recruitment for Iota Gamma. June 1st was the first day that Fraternities on campus could begin recruiting. Since that date we have held 2 recruitment events and have 6 men signed to the Fall 2011 Recruitment Class. The men are: Greg Nordhues (Kearney), Alex Mauch (Omaha), Matt Klein (Omaha), Dylan Obermier (Kearney), Robert Wallace (Broken Bow), and Jordan Girard (Prairie View, KS).

We are hoping to keep the momentum from these signs going to continue to recruit excellent men. Our next planned recruitment event will be held on June 18th at Mike Pelster's parent's house on Lake McConaughy. For more information check out the event Facebook page here.

I hope everyone's summer is going well and you are enjoying the refreshing break from school. I just want to briefly touch on summer recruitment information.

First off, for anyone interested in applying for the Freshmen Scholarship you can find it under the Recruitment tab on the site navigation or click here. You do not have to pledge or become a member of the Fraternity to be eligible to win this scholarship, so everyone please apply!

Huge Announcements!

As the last post stated, the last few weeks have been extremely busy for the Iota Gamma chapter. Greek Week concluded last Thursday, we had Initiation on Friday, the Kent Estes Memorial Golf Tournament on Saturday, and Alumni Charge on Sunday. At times it was hectic with everything going on, but it was definitely fun!

Greek Week finished up on Thursday. Iota Gamma finished 2nd, losing by a small margin of 15 points. We finished 2nd in Capture the Flag, tied for 2nd in the Can Art Display, lost in the Dance Competition, but won the Obstacle Course. You can find pictures and videos of these events in our gallery.

Awards were presented to the Fraternities/Sororities on Wednesday night at the Dance Competition. Iota Gamma is proud to announce that we were given the awards for Philanthropy and Community Service! On top of that, brother Paul Knutson was awarded Chapter Leader of the Year and brother John "Grandpa" Bettles was awarded Councilman of the Year!

Following Greek Week we initiated into our chapter our newest member, Tyler Neal. He finished up the pledge semester by himself and we are extremely proud to have him as the newest member to the Iota Gamma chapter.

Saturday began with our annual Kent Estes Memorial Golf Tournament. The weather Friday gave people a scare, but it ended up being an extremely nice day for the event. There were 29 teams that participated in the tournament overall. With such a large portion of Iota Gamma's alumni back for the tournament it was a great way for the current members and alumni to connect and get to know each other better. After the tournament many of the members and alumni went to the Chicken Coup to continue the fun.

Finally, Sunday came around and we had our last meeting of the semester. With that came Alumni Charge. We are extremely proud, and saddened, to announce the departure of eight of our most excellent members. Cade Craig, David Panowicz, Elliot Becker, Erik Dodge, Luke Gentrup, Nate Summerfield, Paul Knutson, and Taylor Hyatt all went through the Almuni Charge. There is no doubt the impact these members left on our chapter during their time as members and they will be deeply missed.

As the school year begins to wind down the chapter's schedule will ease up to allow for our members to focus on their studies. Be on the look out for information regarding our summer recruitment, which will be released soon.

Busy Week for Iota Gamma

This is an extremely busy week for Iota Gamma. Monday-Thursday the chapter will be competing in Greek Week. We were paired with the Alpha Phis, Alpha Tau Omegas, and the T.I.A.R.A.S. The scheduled events this year are: capture the flag, can competition, dance contest, and obstacle course. Check out our gallery throughout the week for new videos and pictures from the events.

This week is also Initiation week for our Spring pledge class. There are a serious of activities throughout the week that will conclude on Friday with the Initiation ceremony. Saturday is a huge day for our philanthropy efforts as we are hosting our 7th Annual Kent Estes Memorial Golf Tournament. The chapter is excited to have many of our alumni back for the event and to have the opportunity to raise money for a great cause. After the golf tournament alumni and current members will be going to the Chicken Coup to eat and mingle.

Last weekend Iota Gamma held our Black Tie event. It was an extremely classy event held at the brand new, luxurious Younes Conference Center. We would like to thank alumni member JPaul Younes and the entire Younes family for allowing us to use their facilities. The dinner was delicious and the dance was crazy fun.

On March 1st, 2011, Pi Kappa Alpha will celebrate 143 years as the best! Regardless of when and where you were initiated into Pi Kappa Alpha, March 1st is the day we all come together as brothers in the bonds of phi phi kappa alpha and celebrate the establishment of our great Fraternity.

At this special time of year, I encourage you to remember those who came before us and those who today embody what Pi Kappa Alpha means to you and me. I am amazed that the values we hold today, those which are outlined in the True Pike, were molded by men in their late teens and early twenties - more than a century ago.

Our Fraternity flourishes today on campuses large and small, public and private, in every corner of the continent because of the virtues at the core of Pi Kappa Alpha. These principles have been present for over 143 years and remain vibrant in the hearts of brothers across the generations and across our landscape.

Today, I hope you will pause and remember those who have come before us and shaped our great Fraternity - the founders and junior founders of Pi Kappa Alpha. I also hope you will pause and think of those who continue to embody what it is to be a True Pike. Together, the lives of those who came before us, the times we share together, and the principles to which we commit, are what we celebrate this Founders Day. For them - for you - we are truly grateful.

Iota Gamma's Recruitment Top 25 In The Country

Iota Gamma's pledge class for the Fall semester was ranked in the Top 25 Recruitments Nationally!

Iota Gamma was ranked 16th with 37 pledges and ranked 6th with 34 initiates.

Beta Beta Pledge Class Initiates 33 Members

Friday saw the initiation of 33 new brothers from the Beta Beta pledge class! It is one of the largest pledge classes to initiate in Iota Gamma's history. The chapter continues to grow, with 91 active members, and we continue to raise our goals for the future. With the continued hard work of the newest members and the previous actives, there should be little doubt that we will reach our goals this year. And, ultimately, win a Smythe!

Congratulations Beta Beta pledge class on a successful pledge semester thus far. Keep up the good work!

Haunted House 2010

After a successful video game tournament last year at The World Theatre, Iota Gamma has decided to team up again with The World Theatre to provide a screaming good time before Halloween. That's right, come check out The UnderWorld Tours by Pi Kappa Alpha and The World Theatre. Cost is $10 and there will be tours given on October 21-22 & 27-30 from 7-11pm.

During recent renovations at the World Theatre in downtown Kearney, a mysterious door was discovered in the floor of what used to be the stage. There is no power. Only stairs leading to a series of unmapped tunnels. Investigators believe someone has been living here in these catacombs below the Theatre. To explore these tunnels come to the UnderWorld Tours at the World Theatre in downtown Kearney. All proceeds go to save the historic World Theatre.

Go ahead. Scream. No one can hear you in the UnderWorld.

Greetings from Pi Kappa Alpha

Here we are, back at UNK after a very successful and fun summer. I think I speak for many of my fellow members in expressing some major relief to be back in the magical grind that is college life. Personally, I can say that it is very rewarding to leave my summer job as a maintenance crew worker (just don’t call me a janitor, it really hurts deep down) in North Platte. Summer work isn’t fun, and it sure doesn’t compensate for a much more interesting semester at college. Of course summer is not all work, and many epically fun times will surely not be forgotten. Nate and Paul stayed super busy as they worked to recruit a great group of outstanding gentlemen to join Pike. The recruitment events and bbqs which were held this summer really offered a great time for our new members. The events offered afternoons filled with conversation, swimming, eating, and an overall good time for everyone. Most importantly, world famous members Beau Beckwith and Matt Plugge were glad to perform all sorts of water tricks for everyone to hysterically laugh at. Oh yes, it was a summer to be remembered my friends, and after some help from the Beckwith/Plugge A squad, Nate and Paul managed to recruit a fall class which includes 44 new scholars, leaders, athletes, and gentlemen. We are very proud of these new guys, and have an awesome new addition to our fraternity life. Using my keen observation powers, I have noticed that all of our new guys are having an indisputable good time, as well as the older guys who still haven’t been willing to give up the excitement of freshmen year. The first week included an enjoyable mixer with the Gamma Phi sorority. The experience was fun, as we devoured some tasty burgers and socialized with our lovely Gamma Phi friends—as well as more opportunities for Chris Meyer to publically humiliate himself. It has definitely been an exciting start, and I am glad to say that we are already actively working to better the Kearney community. On Friday morning we gathered our forces to offer our assistance during campus move-in. For some it may be a challenge to wake up at 7 am on a Saturday morning to move a freshman’s possessions into a dorm room, but not for the unbreakable men of Pi Kappa Alpha. The event was a real success, and will just be the beginning of a semester filled with opportunities to further benefit the city. It has been a great opening week here at UNK and should be a big semester for Pike as we continue to develop our members into successful men. Once again, a big shout-out to all our new guys. Congratulations!

Iota Gamma returns from Convention!

Four gentlemen from Iota Gamma returned home yesterday from a 5-day trip to Austin, TX for this year’s Pi Kappa Alpha International Convention. President Bill Hayward, Internal VP Andi Diediker, Recruitment Chairman Paul Knutson, and Recruitment Chairman Nate Summerfield represented the chapter and returned with many accolades. Iota Gamma was recognized as being in the Top 20% of the 215 Pike chapters in the United States and Canada with its receipt of the Raymond L. Orians Chapter Excellence Award. In addition, Iota Gamma was 1 of 3 finalists for the Athletics programming award. Although this past year was very successful, members are already excited for the coming year and furthering last year’s achievements.

In addition to the chapter being recognized at the convention, Iota Gamma attendee Nate Summerfield was selected to Pi Kappa Alpha’s prestigious Supreme Council. The Supreme Council is composed of seven total members, two of which are voting undergraduate members. Undergraduate members of the council are provided with all-expense paid travel to four meetings over their year term. The Supreme Council members focus on the vision for our Fraternity over the long term and serve as role models in living the values of the Fraternity. Congratulations Nate for your achievement

Pikes Win 8th Intramural Championship in 10 Years!

The Iota Gamma chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha won the all-campus intramural championship this year for the 8th time in 10 years! It was a blowout victory, winning by an overwhelming 2,715 points.

Golf Tournament Raises $5,100

The 6th Annual Dr. Kent Estes Memorial Golf Tournament raised $5100 for UNK scholarships this year. Thanks to all of those that played in the tournament or donated to the Dr. Kent Estes Scholarship Fund. We hope to see everyone back next year for another great tournament!

Busy Week for Iota Gamma

The past week was a busy one for the Iota Gamma chapter. It began on Thursday April 22nd where several Pikes worked security for the Kellie Pickler concert that was hosted in the UNK Health and Sports Center. After the concert the members stayed around to help tear down the stage. They were able to meet Kellie Pickler and took a picture with her holding an "I Heart Pi K A Shirt" which were sold to help support the Kent Estes Memorial Golf Tournament.

The week continued on Saturday, April 24th with the Kent Estes Memorial Golf Tournament. Junior Luke Gentrup planned the event and did an excellent job. The tournament and Black Tie see a large amount of alumni come back and it is always great to catch-up with them. The only problem the tournament faced was the weather as it began to pour down rain near the end, but the players were able to finish their rounds. The winning team consisted of: Senior Josh Jensen, Sophomore Beau Beckwith, and Alumni Craig Zegers and Ben Allemann. The group shot a 55.

After the golf tournament was Black Tie which was planned by Senior Ben Schleiger. After working hard on the golf tournament all day we relaxed and had a good time! The event began with a dinner and award ceremony hosted at the Holiday Inn followed by a dance shortly after. Special thanks has to go out to the Younes family who has always been kind and helped us with our events. There were nine awards given out at Black Tie that were previously voted upon by the chapter, and are listed below.

Former Chapter Advisor Craig Johring came back for the event from Mexico City. He awarded Senior Eric Hinze with the Johring Award that was previously given to the chapter but had not been handed out in a couple of years. It goes to a member of the house who has shown exceptional leadership quality. Hinze received an 1865 sabre, the sword thought to be carried by the Founders and is a key piece in our shield.

The next night, Sunday, April 25th, the chapter went through Executive Board Transitions and Alumni Charge. All executive positions except for the President went through voting and had new members. The executive board also had some minor changes including merging the Corresponding and Recording Secretaries into one position and adding Member Development as an exec position. It was a busy week where many alumni came back for the golf tournament and Black Tie, many members went alumni, and a new executive board took over the house. Not to mention Kellie Pickler holding a shirt saying she loves Pike!

Greek Week 2010

The 2010 Greek Week took place from Monday April 12th to Thursday April 15th. Iota Gamma was paired with Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Tau Omega, and Sigma Lambda Beta and the team had many successes throughout the week.

The first event was the All Greek Fashion Show on Monday. The Fashion Show involved each Greek organization, picking one member to represent them in a fashion show. Freshman Tommy Erhart modeled for Pike with a Michael Jackson theme. Although a classic performance by Tommy and his partner Shayla Sylvester - they were unable to crack the top 3.

The next event was the Derby Race on Tuesday.The race required each team to make a derby push car and a go three laps around a track: one lap where two girls push a guy driver, one lap where two guys push a girl driver, and the last lap is the team's choice. Thanks to the construction work of sophomores Marshall Milanuk and Kevin Kalkowski and many other Pikes, "The Blur" was able to roll to a first place finish!

The next event was the Step-Competition on Wednesday. The step-competition involved each team preparing a step routine that was then scored by judges. The scoring is based on: originiality, creativity, difficulty, and appearance. The Pike members consisted of: Junior Paul Knuston, Sophomores Adam Couture and Jacob Navrkal, and Freshmen Anthony Chavez, Brandon Sklenar and David Caskey. The Pike team was able to gangster dance their way to a first place finish!

The week came to a close with the final day of events on Thursday. The first event of the day was the Championship Powderpuff Football Game. It was a match-up between the defending champion AOIIs (who received a bye into the championship game) vs. the Gamma Phis (who won a semi-final game against the Alpha Phis to advance to the championship game). The AOIIs came out fast and took a huge lead early in the game. The G-phis attempted a comeback late in the game but it was not enough. The AOIIs defended their title and won the game!

The next event was a Water Balloon Throw. Each Greek organization had five of its members throw a water balloon three times, with the longest throw winning. Sophomore Heath Erwin was the longest thrower for Pike, but finished second overall.

After the Water Balloon Throw came the Tug-of-War Competition. The Pike team consisted of: Senior Brian McDonald, Junior Jake Wardyn and Freshmen Andrew Roberts, Dan Anderson, and Tyler Brown. Pike faced off against the Sig Eps and quickly finished the round. The Sig Eps then lost to the Delts who advanced to the championship vs. the Pikes. Again, the Pikes tugged hard and finished the round quickly, winning the Tug-of-War Championship!

The final event of Greek Week was an egg toss. Each member of a fraternity was paired with a member of a sorority and had to pass an egg back and forth, taking a step back after each throw. The Pike members consisted of: Sophomores Heath Erwin and Tyler Lee and Freshman Andi Diediker. The teams couldn't take care of the gentle eggs that afternoon and failed to win the event.

The Pike team finished first in the Derby Race, Step-Competition, Powderpuff Football, and Tug-of-War and finished second in the Water Balloon Throw. Overall the Pike team finished second by a close 61 points!

Pikes Inaugurated into Student Government

2010 Firemen's BBQ

Watch Firemen's BBQ NTV Interview

On Sunday, March 28th from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. the men of The Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity will be hosting a Firemen's BBQ at the Harmon Park Activity Center.

A few gentlemen from the chapter will rise early on Sunday morning and smoke pork for the event. Various sides will complement the pulled pork sandwiches, including baked beans, coleslaw, etc...

Tickets for the BBQ are $5 per person and a limited number will be available.

All proceeds will go to the Kearney Volunteer Fire Deparment. The department plans on using the funds to purchase a mobile educational training module that will be used to educate the community and also local schools on fire safety.

Pikes Working Hard Again at World Theatre

On Saturday, March 27th Pi Kappa Alpha members worked throughout the afternoon preparing the World Theatre for the destruction of the center wall currently dividing the theater.
